IF THERE IS ONLY ROOM FOR ONE PLANT: ZUCCHINI

It’s worth it for the delicious zucchini flowers alone

The end of April is the time to plant zucchini seedlings. One balcony is enough.

For all non-gardeners

Even if the garden is not your home turf, it’s worth reading on: Small zucchini seedlings, planted in the ground now with little effort, will reward you with lots of zucchini flowers and great enjoyment.

Zucchini flowers stuffed with goat’s cheese or sheep’s cheese, breaded, fried briefly in a mixture of butter and oil in a pan, topped with fresh Parmesan cheese, make an excellent starter or a delicious main course with baguette, which goes well with a glass of white wine.

The Parmesan combined with the eggs in the breading and the goat’s or feta cheese bring pure umami to the plate.

Too fragile for trade

Zucchini flowers are delicate and should be prepared immediately or at the latest the day after harvesting. This is demanding for any delivery process. Zucchini flowers are therefore very rare on the market and only available at a relatively high price.

Undemanding

The zucchini plant, on the other hand, is relatively robust and happy with little water and sun. You can simply let them grow and enjoy their rapid growth.

It is therefore the ideal starter plant for any novice gardener and always a good choice if there is not too much space available.

Experienced hobby gardeners, whether in their own garden or in a rented plot, therefore sometimes wave off zucchinis. A single good plant can ripen a large number of zucchinis. One or two of them then sometimes look green and need a zucchini break for a year.

However, if you regularly harvest the flowers with the still very slender, small zucchinis, every connoisseur will be happy about the supply in the kitchen and nobody has to fear an oversupply of zucchinis or even giant zucchinis.

“If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, look after your garden”

Spanish shoe designer Manolo Blahnik quotes Voltaire and recommends not only breathtakingly beautiful high heels but also his favorite gardens on his homepage.

He is not alone in the creative scene: Belgian fashion designer Dries van Noten, English chef and writer Nigel Slater, American conductor William Christie and many others find gardening an inspiration and their own garden an important retreat.

Who knows, maybe a first large pot with a zucchini plant will lead to ordering your first raised bed made of larch wood for the balcony and end with a garden co-working space where gardening and harvesting are shared with friends

The zucchini flowers are sure to be very popular with everyone. The tiny zucchini fruits on the flowers have a wonderful, slightly sweet taste and are clearly preferable to any large zucchini specimen from the supermarket.

Puristic

The home-grown zucchinis are free from pesticides and herbicides, which makes eating a salad of raw zucchinis tasty.

We are already looking forward to the first zucchinis from our garden so that we can serve up Effilee’s quick and delicious zucchini and cashew salad recipe.

Parmesan also plays a leading role in this recipe and points to the origin of the zucchini, the country of Italy.

The pumpkin plant was cultivated centuries ago in Central America. The typically elongated zucchinis that we know today were cultivated near Milan in the 19th century and were first documented there in 1901 under the name zucchini, the diminutive form of zucca (pumpkin).

Zucchinis have made friends in cuisines all over the world. In the USA, people like to talk about zoodles when they combine zucchinis in long strips with various pasta sauces instead of pasta.

This has the great advantage that you only have to sauté the zucchini strips briefly in the already cooked pasta sauce. A purist’s delight when there is no more pasta from Puglia in the cupboard.

In Ukraine, zucchini slices are often dusted with flour or semolina, deep-fried and eaten with sour cream.

The source of happiness

At planting time, you can find seedlings everywhere: from DIY stores to monastery gardens. As we didn’t have time to visit an idyllic organic market this spring and still want to be sure that our zucchini seedlings are from certified organic cultivation (which some sellers at other outlets can’t tell you), we did some research for you and tried them out: Our recommendation, the organic garden mail order company Hof Jeebel.

The range on offer there is huge (nine different varieties of zucchini alone), the online store works flawlessly and so does the shipping.

If you are tempted and have a little more space to plant, then our recommendation for the famous “4 plants” is not hemp, but zucchini green, zucchini yellow, sage and chard.

These four plants are relatively undemanding and can be used in many different ways in the kitchen. There is no need to form an association and your ophthalmologist will be pleased to see plenty of green vegetables on your menu.
