VOLUNTEERING IS ALWAYS WORTH IT

Commitment as a Labor of Love

In the 5th century, Pericles said, “Anyone who takes no part in the affairs of the city is not a passive citizen, but a bad one.”

An important part of life for many

36.7 percent of the population in Germany aged 14 and older are involved in volunteer work (Volunteer Work in Germany 2024, Federal Chancellery). The figures have declined slightly compared to the previous year but remain surprisingly high.

The largest area in which people are involved is sports, at 13 percent. In second place is volunteer work for people who need support, and in third place is culture and music.

A large proportion of volunteers who serve in honorary positions—and thus receive only an expense allowance, but no honorarium or salary—devote 5 or more hours per week to this work. Most of them have been doing so for many years, and many hold several honorary positions at the same time.

It’s no wonder that by far the most common reason people give up volunteer work—which is usually done alongside school and a job—is that they no longer have the time for it.

Getting Involved Is Good for You

Volunteering is always a voluntary choice, so everyone can choose a field of activity that is close to their heart. Whether you care about preserving cultural monuments or enjoy reading aloud to children or adults, there are There is virtually no area where volunteer work is not welcome.

At GloriousMe, this has involved decades of volunteer work for the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, the Frankfurter Patronatsverein, and the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company. These are topics that deeply interest us, and we take great pleasure in further developing them.

Honor Behind the Scenes

Volunteering has many benefits: Compared to a regular job, you can decide for yourself how much time to invest and with whom you’ll work—whether in a club, on the executive board, on the advisory board, or on the board of trustees.

At the same time, volunteering offers behind-the-scenes insights that money can’t buy.

This incentive is used, for example, in Scotland, through a program designed specifically to encourage young people to volunteer: Anyone between the ages of 16 and 26 who participates in volunteer projects can earn points through the program, which make traveling by public transportation more affordable and allow them to enter raffles for the chance to meet top athletes or artists.

Who hasn’t been in a situation at work where you have to grit your teeth because your new boss has no clue or lacks leadership skills, or because you don’t get any support—and therefore no budget—for a brilliant idea? Suddenly—and hopefully only temporarily—even the monthly paycheck feels like compensation for suffering, even for the most dedicated employees. In many cases, however, changing employers isn’t so easy for a wide variety of reasons.

As a result, many organizations are plagued by a significant number of employees who, deep down, have already mentally checked out.

It’s different in volunteer work. Here, a “French exit ” isn’t necessary, because you can step down at any time, except during election cycles.

There are countless ways to get involved. If you’ve had bad luck and encountered a lack of appreciation while volunteering—or other volunteers you don’t get along with—there are exciting opportunities just around the corner that are well worth your time.
