As you make your bed, so you lie
Good bed linen lasts almost forever. But new bed linen is good for dreaming.
The daily nightly luxury
While some luxury investments sit in the garage for days or gather dust in the basement, the planned fitness center at home, you can experience the luxury of bed linen every day.
A wonderful feeling: slipping into bed in the evening, covered with good bed linen and falling asleep with a wonderful feeling of well-being on your cheeks.
As we all experience bedding every day, there are strong opinions about what is perceived as comfort and what is not.
During the one gets nightmares in patterned sheets and white is the only “color” that seems acceptable, the other thinks it would be far too cool and loves large patterns. Some like the soft effect of flannel, others only let Egyptian cotton or silk touch their skin.
So far, so individual. But doesn’t the very thought of luxurious bed linen tempt you to dream about it again or choose something new?
Found in luxury hotels worldwide
The Italian brand Frette has a leading position in luxury hotels, whether in Milan, Monte Carlo or Hong Kong. The sheets and pillows can be found in the finest hotel rooms and suites around the world. Founded in Grenoble in 1860, the company is now based in Monza in Lombardy and Milan.
Hotel Danieli in Venice was one of the first important hotel customers, today you can find Frette bed linen in Sydney, Seoul or Kyoto.
Many hotels mention in their room descriptions that the bed linen comes from Frette. This is understandable, because the extremely high quality of this bed linen allows you to sleep blissfully after a long flight or an intensive day of sightseeing, despite jet lag or one too many drinks.
King Charles III prefers Heirloom
The company Heirloom from West Sussex in England proudly bears two royal warrants, that of the King of England, Charles III and that of the Prince of Wales. A friendly team produces bed linen for Heirloom in a wide variety of fabrics and with all other refinements.
If you want to find out more about fabric qualities, you should definitely watch this video from Heirloom, in which the different qualities and processing options are presented.
With particular pride, like almost every renowned company that also offers custom-made bed linen, at the end of the video they also talk about the yachting customers of the seafaring nation of England and discreetly point out that the bed linen is clearly labeled.
Because the bed linen in the owner’s cabin on board may look like the crew’s bed linen at first glance, but it is very likely to be of different qualities, which should not be mixed up after washing.
As is so often the case in life, it all depends on your priorities. The ladies in the Heirloom video speak radiantly to the camera: “It just depends, what kind of investment you want to put into your bedlinens”.
Better not
If you have invested in fine bed linen, then it makes sense to enjoy this investment for a long time. The three most important tips:
- Never fill the washing machine too full
- No fabric softener
- No dryer, if possible
- The lowest possible spin speed
Better always
The feel of bed linen qualities on the skin is very individual. Most manufacturers send fabric samples when ordering online or have larger fabric samples available in their stores.
The best fabric quality for you is a question of which feel you prefer and a question of price. Should it be Sea Island Cotton (the preferred fabric of James Bond author Ian Fleming and therefore also that of his James Bond creations), Egyptian cotton or organic cotton from specially certified organic plantations.
The number of threads alone is not a measure of quality. It ultimately depends on which yarns have been processed using which method.
Tradition and start-ups
Some bed linen manufacturers were founded in traditional textile locations and often have a long family tradition, such as the Swiss companies Schlossberg and Christian Fischbacher.
The latter come from St. Gallen, a traditional center of the textile industry. On your next visit there, we recommend the small, beautiful and very interesting textile museum in St. Gallen for any lover of fabrics.
There are also new developments in bed linen: start-ups such as Tekla from Copenhagen (where you can choose beautiful comforter covers in pastel colors reminiscent of typical ice cream colors) or the buyers of the long-established bed linen production of the textile company Strunkmann & Meister in Bielefeld.
These young companies generally offer a reduced selection of fabrics and colors, arguing that this democratizes beautiful bed linen and makes it accessible to everyone in terms of price.
If you are in Bielefeld in the near future, you can drop by the manufactory on Thursdays since 1832, learn more about the production of bed linen and get advice on site.
For the fans of Emmanuel Macron
If you want to indulge in the playfulness of French patterns and colors, the traditional French company D.Porthault, Paris is the right place for you. In addition to a large selection of very classic French bed linen designs, there are also guest towels with golden trimmings, Girlande de Lierre Gold Ems, which fit perfectly in the Elysée Palace and perhaps also in your home.
Whether it’s 71, Avenue Franklin T. Roosevelt, Paris or IKEA, new bed linen is a pleasure and, if it’s good quality, it gets even better over the years.
