If you love your clothes, brush them
It goes without saying when it comes to brushing your teeth. It’s also worth giving your clothes a good brush twice a day: the reward is longer-lasting clothes and lower cleaning costs.
Resolutions for the Fall
With temperatures dropping—especially since last week—there’s no other choice: it’s time to pack away the summer clothes and bring out the fall and winter wardrobe. We hope, as do you, that all those beautiful jackets, skirts, and coats made of wool or even cashmere have come through the summer break in good shape.
Trust is good, but checking is better: It’s worth inspecting every item of clothing and brushing it off with a clothes brush. Moisture can find its way into any closet, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the climate. This can easily cause a layer of moisture to form in certain areas of the clothing, which can be easily removed with a clothes brush.
From then on, you should make it a habit to brush your clothes once in the morning and once in the evening.
Good clothes deserve good brushes
When brushing textiles, you first brush against the nap—and thus against the direction of the weave—and then with the nap. The main purpose of brushing is to gently remove dust, as well as other particles such as lint or powdery stains.
Dust is practically everywhere, and nice suits, pants, and dresses seem to attract it.
It’s important to use the right clothing brush. Ideally, it should have two sides: one with soft bristles and one with stiffer bristles. Or you can simply use two brushes. Natural bristles are definitely the better choice. The bristles should penetrate the tiny pores of the fabric, but under no circumstances should they damage the fabric. A delicate touch is key.

If you still have a so-called lint roller in your home: Goodbye—and good riddance. The surface of these rollers is slightly sticky so they can pick up lint, but they leave particles of adhesive on your clothes, which then eagerly attract even more dust.
Noticeable and visible
You can really tell how much it benefits the clothing to be lightly brushed before and after wearing it. This is a great way to remove many stains. If dusty stains can’t be removed with a dry brush, simply hold your hand under running water to lightly dampen the brush surface and use it to remove the stain.
Well-maintained and brushed clothing needs to be taken to the dry cleaner less often and stays looking good longer. Every butler knew this, and brushing clothes was one of a butler’s most important duties.
Whether you’re a fan of *The Crown*, *Gosford Park*, *Downton Abbey*, or *The Butler*, follow the example of the best butlers. We’re sure King Charles III’s butler is very familiar with this—but he probably wouldn’t talk about it.
We can, however, reveal where the royal household orders its brushes: from the traditional brush maker Kent. This small company has not only succeeded in obtaining a so-called Royal Warrant —the seal indicating that the royal household orders products from them—but it has also managed to retain this seal throughout the reigns of successive monarchs. Hats off to them.
If the trip to England is too far for you, or if you’re worried about having to engage in lengthy email exchanges with customs officials online, you can also find Kent clothes brushes at Manufactum.
