The unassuming yogurt deserves a starring role
The nutritious ingredients in a high-quality yogurt, combined with its delicious taste, make it a star in its own right. All the other ingredients are up to you.
Yogurt—because good things can be simple
Proteins, calcium, and lactic acid bacteria — Our gut—and therefore our brain—loves all of this. Our body loves these nutrients. A high-quality organic yogurt contains these ingredients. That’s all it takes.
Anything that causes the yogurt to lose its white color—such as food coloring, sugar, additives to make it smooth, and flavorings intended to create the illusion that the yogurt is a flavorful fruit, vanilla, or chocolate yogurt—is unnecessary or counterproductive.
In the mountains
GloriousMe recently rediscovered just how delicious yogurt can be while hiking in East Tyrol. The owner of the alpine hut offered homemade yogurt as part of her menu. Guests could enjoy it plain or with lingonberries.
That’s how we rediscovered the delicious taste of good yogurt and realized that much of what’s sold as yogurt on supermarket shelves is relatively bland.

The alpine innkeeper had all the necessary ingredients for making yogurt right there: milk and some ready-made yogurt.
That’s because making yogurt is incredibly simple: Whole milk is heated to 95 degrees. Then you let it cool to 45 degrees in a bowl and “inoculate” it with a portion of ready-made organic yogurt. Then all it takes is a period of time during which the mixture is kept at 45 degrees (for example, in the oven), and after a day, the mixture has turned into a nice bowl of fresh yogurt.
What should you look out for?
Not everyone has the time or inclination to make yogurt themselves—even though the process is incredibly simple. You can now find good organic yogurt at some supermarkets, farmers’ markets, almost all farm stands, and many organic supermarkets.
It goes without saying that low-fat yogurt isn’t worth it. There are far better and more effective ways to lose weight.
The higher the fat content, the better. Good organic yogurt requires whole milk.
For dessert
Homemade yogurt or high-quality organic yogurt can make for a trendy dessert. Fill a nice glass with the best jam you can find. For example, a delicious apricot jam, a tart blackberry jam, or an excellent raspberry jam. English lemon curd also pairs perfectly with yogurt.

Then pour in the yogurt. That way, everyone can mix and match the ingredients in their glass however they like.
A dessert made with good yogurt has many advantages: It comes together very quickly, the yogurt’s tartness is a welcome contrast after a heavy main course, and the dessert is much lighter than many other delicious desserts that are much higher in calories.
Give it a try—we’re sure you won’t wait until the next meal, but will find yourself reaching into the fridge more often to grab some yogurt and one of your favorite jams to enjoy.
