NOVEMBER BLUES? WE RECOMMEND PRAGUE

VISITING OR WITH FRIENDS

“The person I pity who know not the city … the beautiful city of Prague” said the English poet and journalist William Jefferey Prowse. We agree with him.

“Why don’t you finally come to Prague with us?”

Friends of GloriousMe had been suggesting this for a long time and so we answered the call and decided to come back soon after visiting Prague. It was a similar story for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who traveled to Prague in 1778 for the premiere of his opera Don Giovanni, made friends there and returned for further premieres, premieres and concerts.

The journey from Vienna to Prague by coach took around five days in those days. No wonder that people particularly appreciated the comfortable accommodation that Mozart found with his friends afterwards.

For today’s traveler, we recommend the Hotel Julius. You can’t stay in a more central location in Prague: In the middle of the old town, so that many things are within easy walking distance.

We felt very comfortable at Hotel Julius.

November is quieter than other months in Prague, but can also have cooler temperatures. Those who like to lie in the warm water in the evening and enjoy a hot sauna in the wellness area are well accommodated at the Hotel Boho, which is also centrally located.

A good breakfast

On the first and last day in Prague, it’s worth having breakfast at Eska. Breakfast there starts at 7.00 a.m., so there is plenty of time to see Prague. On the last day, all those who love good bread as much as we do will return to Eska to pack some of the excellent loaves in their suitcases so that they can enjoy Bread 33 or Bread 66 again at home and think back to the wonderful days in Prague.

Bread 33 is so named because it consists of 33 percent rye, while bread 66 consists of 66 percent rye flour. Both breads owe their great taste to the triple sourdough, natural organic flours and other ingredients. All you need is a good butter.

If you want to enjoy your first coffee in the morning in Art Nouveau splendor, Café Imperial is the place to go. The breakfast menu there is rather international. The tiled pillars, the tiled walls, the ceilings, the lamps … it’s hard to concentrate on your plate and cup in this ornamentation.

Take your best walking shoes

Prague is best experienced on foot. On a first visit to Prague, the excellently preserved and restored Old Town is a must. While in many cities destroyed by the Second World War you can only marvel at individual houses or historical replicas, Prague offers the original in many streets.

The beautiful baroque houses coming from the Vltava Bridge up to the castle take you back to a bygone era and you think you can see Mozart’s traveling carriage just around the next corner.

The pride of every country can often be seen in the National Gallery, and Prague is no exception. Depending on your taste, we recommend focusing on the Old Masters, acquired in earlier years by the Bohemian nobility and donated to the museum, or one of the current exhibitions. Don’t miss the Kuchyn Restaurant in the National Gallery.

They cook according to old Czech recipes, the beer is delicious and the view of the city from the Kuchyn restaurant is magnificent. We can’t promise the sunset we experienced there, but there’s always a good dinner in the “kitchen”. Our friends had thankfully reserved a table there for us.

A crystal clear decision

Anyone who knows GloriousMe knows that we love the art of glassblowing. Fine glass from Lobmeyr Vienna or vases from Venice are our favorite souvenirs. In Prague, we love the glass art of Moser. Moser Glas was founded in Karlovy Vary in 1857. The store in Prague alone is worth a visit.

Many of the glass sets could currently be used for state banquets at the White House if they were not of European origin. We love many of the vases and recommend Moser’s carafes to anyone who wants to store their port or sherry in style or give it as a gift.

Back to the Future

If you stroll through Prague, you will notice many appealing small cafés, restaurants and interesting little stores. Quite a few of them were founded by refugees from Ukraine who have found a new home in the Czech Republic and combine the historical charm of Prague with modernity.

Contemporary art and very good exhibitions can be found in the Kunsthalle in Prague.

Mozart received a commission for the opera “La clemenza di Tito” on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia, which took place there on September 6, 1791, it is worth planning in advance to experience an opera performance in the impressive State Opera. Many performances are well attended.

Speaking of planning: Our friends recommend arriving in Prague on a Sunday. Most tourists leave on this day and you can enjoy the city a little emptier. The November blues evaporate very quickly there.
