Particularly important in the morning and afternoon
UV rays can seriously damage the eyes in the long term. Sunglasses are much more than just a fashion accessory.
The perspective
The findings on sun protection for the skin are now widely known. Unfortunately, elegant sun hats still lead a shadowy existence outside of Ascot, despite the fantastic creations of Fiona Bennet, Berlin, Lock & Co Hatters, London and Berry Rutjes in The Hague.
Every child knows that you need to protect your skin with sun cream.
The majority of studies on the potentially damaging effects of UV rays focus on the skin. The smaller number of ophthalmology studies dealing with the effects of the sun’s rays on the eyes should not be overlooked.
The eyes absorb sunlight in their own way due to their function, their position on the face and the angle of vision when walking. The position of the sun and the reflection of the ground play a major role in this.
Studies conducted in Japan in particular (Sasaki J. UV exposure to eyes greater in morning, late afternoon. 111th Ann. Meeting, Japanesse Ophthalmologie Soc., Osaka, Japan, 2017) indicate that radiation exposure to the eyes is highest in the morning and afternoon.
Wearing sunglasses not only in the blazing midday sun, but also in the morning and afternoon, at times when the sun is lower and the eyes catch more of the rays directly, therefore makes sense and is by no means just the attitude of a diva.
The bigger the better
The size and shape of sunglasses is not just a question of taste. Sunglasses should allow as little unfiltered stray light as possible to reach the eye from above, below and from the side.
A small frame with correspondingly small lenses can even be counterproductive. The pupils of the eyes are relatively wide open behind the dark-tinted lenses and can receive unfiltered scattered light in the event of strong reflections from snow, water or light-colored stones with small frames or very narrow temples of sunglasses. This allows the UV and blue components of the light to reach the eyes.
Quality before quantity
The quality of the lenses in sunglasses is also important. If you want to find out more about this, take a look at this article from GloriousMe.
A little sunglasses etiquette
If you meet someone in bright sunshine, you should first take off your sunglasses for a few minutes to give the other person a chance to see your eyes unobstructed.
The eyes are a glimpse into the soul and a quick glance is often enough to assess how your boyfriend or girlfriend is actually feeling.
Wearing sunglasses indoors is bad style and we actually thought this advice was superfluous until we saw the editor-in-chief of the US edition of VOGUE, Anna Wintour, sitting next to the late Queen Elizabeth IIat a fashion show in England. At that moment, we lost all respect for Anna Wintour.

So that you don’t lose your eyesight for as long as possible, you should always have your sunglasses to hand, especially now in spring when the sun is still relatively low, and enjoy the wonderful month of May outdoors as much as possible.
