WELL EQUIPPED FOR THE WINTER

7 tips on what you can do for your immune system now

It doesn’t need the leaves that are currently sweeping off the trees to remind us that winter is near.

High time to prepare the immune system for winter

The change of seasons always comes too quickly. The warm rays of the sun have just warmed us and we are already reaching for the warmest woolen sweaters.

The body needs some time to adjust and is particularly vulnerable during this transitional period. At the moment, we are seeing people everywhere who have a cold.

The garage reminds us that the car needs to be winterized. However, it’s easy to forget that our immune system is also grateful for a little support to get us through the end of the year.

The immune system – our shield

Our immune system is our defence shield that recognizes bacteria and viruses and fends them off in various ways. It prevents the penetration of potential pathogens by creating barriers or with substances that render them harmless.

The most important helpers in our body are our skin, which does not allow many things to penetrate, the processes in the stomach and intestines, enzymes and mucus as well as cell bodies that attack intruders recognized as harmful.

The immune system is constantly learning, develops more antibodies and helps the body to eliminate what could be a more serious burden with mild inflammation.

Once you understand how the immune system works, it becomes clear why we can help the immune system by supporting the skin, throat, stomach and intestines.

Off to Sri Lanka

In an ideal world, we would all be heading off to wonderful Sri Lanka for an Ayurveda cure at the end of October. In a not-so-ideal world, it’s helpful to remember the most important tips on how to strengthen the immune system.

As you don’t have much time, here are 7 tips that can be quickly and easily integrated into your daily routine:

7 tips to strengthen the immune system

At dawn: Mouthwash with oil

Swish a tablespoon of oil in your mouth. This Ayurvedic ritual can be performed first thing in the morning while you are still half asleep, for example when clearing out the dishwasher.

You always have an oil to hand and pulling the oil vigorously through your teeth in the mouth area helps to bind and remove the harmful substances that have entered the mouth and throat overnight.

A glass of lukewarm water with ginger and lemon

Ideal for doing something good for the digestive tract, which plays a crucial role in the immune system. A little lemon juice and ginger in a glass of lukewarm water is enough. Before your first coffee or tea, of course.

Morning sport

It almost doesn’t matter which sport your heart beats for. Whether you prefer the treadmill, the bike or the yoga mat, whether it’s Pilates or ski gymnastics.

It’s all about getting the body moving and using the early morning hours to do so. The endorphins and dopamine produced in the process are the best possible start to the fall day.

At lunchtime, you usually try to spend lunch with a colleague who you otherwise often only see on the screen, and with darkness setting in early in the evening, it’s usually difficult to fit in a sports session at this time of year if you’ve had a long day.

Cordial without shaking hands

We have also learned this well, but have almost forgotten it again and have returned to old rituals.

There’s no doubt that a handshake or a hug are warm and often comforting gestures. But especially now, when so many people around us are coughing and sneezing, it makes more sense to avoid them for the most part.

When you first meet someone in the morning, start expressing your warmth with a beaming smile and keep at it until the evening. Some will react with relief, some with incomprehension. But the latter are usually the ones who react most violently as soon as you have to call in sick.

Nutrition that brings fire

The triad of ginger, garlic and chili goes well with many dishes. But other spices, provided they are fresh and of good quality, are also particularly good for the body at the moment.

Fermented foods, linseed, plenty of fish, vegetables, pulses, nuts and fruit are already part of your balanced, healthy diet as a GloriousMe reader.

However, if you are traveling a lot and it is not always easy to eat a healthy diet, zinc in capsule form and magnesium in powder form can help to give the body what it can otherwise get from food.

A glass of aronia juice

Aronia, the berries from the cold, are ideal at this time of year. A glass in the afternoon is better than any sweet snack that only supposedly helps you out of the afternoon slump at your desk.

The festive season with its many temptations is still ahead of us. If you manage to hold back on sweets and alcohol now, you will be able to enjoy all the delicacies much more at the end of December.

Good for the soul and good night

Whatever is good for the soul: a consciously enjoyed cup of tea, a walk, candles, music, an oil massage with a good body oil that also relaxes, treat yourself to some time out whenever you can.

Sufficient sleep is one of the most important helpers for the immune system.

However, we admit that we rarely manage to get a good night’s sleep these days. Of course, we know all the rules for getting a good night’ s sleep.

But the thought of war against Ukraine regularly keeps us awake. However, it is a very small price to pay, which we are always aware of when reading Serhij Zhadan ‘s books.

Get through the fall safely.
