Myths and reality: relaxed enjoyment when eating outdoors
One of the best promises of summer: eating al fresco, in the open air
From picnic blankets and outdoor kitchens
There are many different ways to eat outdoors: From a picnic on a rough blanket to a fully equipped, shiny steel second kitchen in the open air.
To cut a long story short, because you would certainly like to get back outdoors as quickly as possible – we think the middle way is clearly the best solution.
A picnic on a blanket on the grass sounds picturesque. A small table (even if it’s just a rickety camping table like the one placed on the lawn by the friendly service at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival) has many advantages and offers the best of both worlds.
Picnic romance
The painting and many photos seduce with images of cheerful picnic romance. On a robust blanket, you can see perfectly arranged small cakes, bowls of grilled vegetables, fresh salads, plates, glasses and, in the latter, perfect ice cubes.
Anyone who has prepared all this and dragged it to the perfect picnic spot, only to discover that the look and taste of the food has suffered badly, the serving on plastic leaves a lot to be desired and the rosé is lukewarm, gets an idea of how many stylists have worked to make the photo shoot of the picnic pictures look perfect.
Is this a plea against picnics?
No. But a realistic assessment.
A picnic can be perfect if it is limited to just a few things: a baguette, a good red wine, two cheeses. Then the pleasure of eating in the middle of the countryside, especially if you choose spring or fall as the season, can hardly be increased.
Not without a private chef
The enthusiasm with which people have been investing in outdoor kitchens in recent years, on the other hand, is difficult to understand. Who needs a perfectly equipped second kitchen in the garden that looks best when it is completely tidy?
This can only be intended as an incentive measure for private staff to shorten endless distances from the property to the outdoor kitchen.
Even after studying numerous exclusive outdoor kitchens, we find the sight of trees, shrubs, stones and flower beds far more attractive than the triple barbecue combination with high-tech fridge and pizza oven.
Can working in the kitchen outdoors really be so much more attractive than indoors? Isn’t less more here too? Even if estate agents rave about a highly attractive increase in the purchase price of the property with a second outdoor kitchen.
Always attractive
From GloriousMe’s point of view, a simple outdoor table with a few good quality items on the plates and in the glass is the non-plus-ultra of al fresco dining.
This is the perfect way to spend the best summer hours in good company.
Nature and atmosphere are the most important elements here. Sitting right next to roaring traffic on identical coarse seating furniture without any charm is not really a pleasure, even in the open air.
In the middle of the city, the side street and the small restaurant in the residential area that puts a few charming chairs outside in summer usually help.
Table number 1
In summer, the most attractive table in the restaurant is the one by the wide-open window or the open doors to the terrace. You can take off your sun hat, look outside and sit relaxed when the rain shower approaches.
Table number 1 can also be staged at home: Rearrange your home in summer and place the table by the wide open window for dining and enjoy the summer whatever the weather.
