With a scent from Vienna to India
Throne Prince Franz Ferdinand in India: After a long day of elephant riding and hunting, seeking relaxation with drinks, good conversation and tobacco in the cool arcades of the Chowmahalla Palace
Once upon a time
The description of the perfume Palais Nizam sounds like a fairy tale. That’s how it should be, because it lets the imagination wander to faraway lands and combines the modern fragrance of the perfume with a beautiful story.
Every reach for the bottle thus becomes a trip to India.
Not everything about the history of perfume is invented. The actual history sounds more fabulous than many a fairy tale.
With jewels to fabulous wealth
The Nizam family were the rulers of the former kingdom of Hyderabad. The immense fortune stemmed from the Golconda mines, where diamonds were mined that dominated the world market for a time.
One of the most famous diamonds, the Koh-i-Noor, also comes from Golconda.
The 7th Nizzam, Osman Ali Kahn, Asaf Jah VII, was among the richest people in the world in his time. His royal throne stood in Chowmahalla Palace in present-day Hyderabad.
While traditional fairy tales are often about the poor peasant boy who gets rich by luck or magic, this story has a different course.
The Nizams’ fabulous fortune has been reduced to the status of ordinary “high net worth individuals” by waste and decades of inheritance disputes among the 2740 plaintiffs (supposed or real family members).
The drama of the royal Indian family, including various death threats, makes every other family argument pale in comparison.
Jewels worth English pounds 43 million (conservatively estimated to be worth English pounds 230 million from the family’s point of view) were accepted as compensation for tax payments and are now in the vault of the Indian state.
Anyone who knows the beauty of Indian jewels can understand that it is widely regretted that these valuables are not on public display.
Another 80 million English pounds are in a NatWest Bank account, and for decades there have been legal battles over who ultimately gets access to that money.
From the palace to the small room
The last descendant of the ruling dynasty lives comparatively modestly in an apartment in Istanbul. His mother, Turkish Princess Ezra, managed to sort out the family dispute with the help of an intrepid, excellent Indian lawyer who practices in both London and Delhi.
It is also thanks to the energetic princess that the completely run-down palace of Chowmahalla was restored and renovated by renowned experts with the help of the Indian state and a hotel company.
The fairy-tale palace of the former ruler, who employed up to 14,000 servants (two of whom alone were responsible for roasting the walnuts in the Chowmahalla Palace) is now a luxury hotel.
Overall architecture of the palace is remarkable to this day. If you look at the hotel’s rooms, the standard has become comparatively modest compared to the former royal suites.
Franz Ferdinand on tour
The heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was assassinated with his wife in Sarajevo in 1914, we remember the beginning of the 1st World War, had actually made a two-year trip around the world on the SMS Empress Elisabeth, visiting also India.
According to his biographers, this journey, which he recorded in a diary, was an experience for Franz Ferdinand that opened his narrow mind, which had been trained militaristically on the succession to the throne, to something new: federalism in the multi-ethnic state of Austria-Hungary.
The modern spirit in perfume bottle
The exciting combination of Asia and Europe, old and new, tradition and freshness, is in the perfume Palais Nizam, created by Wiener Blut.
The list of fragrance components:
Saffron stamp– Prunes – Brandy spirit – Bergamot – Old leather – Dhavanam (a plant native to India) – Cistus – Sandalwood.
already reads like a small, promising library.
We find the perfume Palais Nizam very successful, as it is complexly composed, has an interesting floral-spicy character, smells festive, but is elegant and unobtrusive.
The perfume was developed by Austrian creative director Alexander Lauber. Palais Nizam is distributed through his company Wiener Blut, in whose online store we are happy to be regular customers, because the processes work perfectly.
In stationary trade Palais Nizam and other fragrances from the house of Wiener Blut are rarely found.
If your way should lead you to Zurich soon: Spitzenhaus is one of the few perfumeries where Wiener Blut fragrances are represented. There you can try out the fragrance compositions.
When it comes to fragrance, it may rather be a beautiful fairy tale instead of reality
In the exhibition: LONDON:PORT CITY there is a room where a scent artist has recreated the smells that could be experienced in the port of London in earlier centuries: The sea, the ovens, the fish market, the drying of heavy, wet work clothes, the hygienic conditions of the time.
The mix of these components, with respect, is not a pleasure.
Let us rather rejoice in the idealized fragrance of Franz Ferdinand’s journey to India.
Fragrances and travel are closely linked and you may receive a compliment from someone who is passionate about travel when you wear Palais Nizam perfume.
Chanel has also developed a perfume edition based on the idea of travel: Places Coco Chanel loved to visit: Paris – Edinburgh. Paris – Deauville. Paris – Venice.
