For Your Eyes Only

Almost every pleasure is linked to visual impressions: a meal beautifully arranged on a plate, or the costumes in an opera.

Eye health is a precious gift. Yet we usually don’t pay enough attention to our eyes.

Seven tips anyone can use to invest in their eye health seven days a week.

1 Flight of Stairs Instead of a Smartphone

In our daily lives, we spend many hours staring instead of really seeing: at the computer screen, at the windshield, at the tablet. Once we’ve completed a major task—on the computer, for example—our next glance usually goes to our smartphone.

Just leave it alone!

Take the stairs instead of the elevator as often as you can. If your office is on the 17th floor, treat yourself—and your eyes—to a different perspective: a view into the distance.

A small but important exercise for our eyes, which in earlier times were constantly scanning the horizon for game to hunt.

2 Movement

Movement is extremely important for every bodily function, including the eyes.

Ideally, you’ll have already rolled out your yoga mat or put on your running shoes first thing in the morning. Every meter, every movement helps.

3 Green Forage

As much as possible

4 Fish

In particular, types of saltwater fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids should be included on the menu as often as possible.

5. Close your eyes

Getting enough sleep also helps your eyes recover. There’s a simple way to soothe your eyes during the day, too: rub your hands together to generate heat. Close your eyes and cup your palms over them. Lower your head and keep your eyes closed for 10 seconds. let yourself relax.

It works almost always and almost everywhere.

6 Clockwise and counterclockwise

We’re all familiar with this exercise from visits to the eye doctor. Start by rolling your eyes clockwise, beginning at the far right, and then counterclockwise. Next, repeat the exercise in the counterclockwise direction. The exercise feels so good that you’ll probably find yourself doing it several times in a row on your own.

7 With a fountain pen or pencil

Between life’s major events, the fountain pen tends to sit on the desk more as a decorative item. Pick up the fountain pen (a pencil will work just as well, of course), hold it out, and focus your gaze on the tip of the pen.

Move the pen toward you and follow the tip of the pen with your eyes. Ideally, do this 20 times. Afterward, you’ll close your eyes on your own to rest.

And that brings us right back to Tip #1: Turn off your laptop or smartphone (even though GloriousMe, of course, offers many more interesting articles and tips) and head out into the fresh air.
